How to set up and use Notification Center’s Do Not Disturb mode

April 23, 2014

While Notification Center is a great tool for receiving alerts on your iPhone and iPad, sometimes notification turns into interruption. That’s where iOS’ Do Not Disturb feature can come in handy. It allows your iPhone or iPad to continue to collect notifications, minus the beeping and buzzing. Whether you’re in a meeting or want a peaceful night’s sleep, Do Not Disturb can give you it. Here’s how to use it:

How to enable Do Not Disturb

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to launch Control Center.
  2. Tap on the icon in the top row that looks like a crescent moon to toggle Do Not Disturb on.
  3. That’s it. Do Not Disturb should now be active. You can verify it’s on by closing Control Center and looking in your top status bar. You should see a crescent moon icon off to the right. That means Do Not Disturb is activated.

To turn Do Not Disturb off again, just follow the same steps again.

How to schedule Do Not Disturb for specific times

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb.
  3. Turn the toggle for Scheduled to On in oder to activate the scheduling feature.
  4. Now directly underneath that, go ahead and set your times that you’d like to have Do Not Disturb enable itself.

That’s it. Do Not Disturb will now come on at the time you’ve schedule. Unfortunately Do Not Disturb only lets you schedule one block of time currently, hopefully a future iteration of iOS will let you schedule multiple Do Not Disturb sessions.

How to customize Do Not Disturb settings

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb.
  3. Tap Allow Calls From to choose between Everyone, No One, Favorites, All Contacts, or a specific group.
  4. Toggle Repeated Calls to on if you would like a second call within 3 minutes to be let through.
  5. Choose to Silence calls Always or Only while iPhone is locked.

Do you use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone or iPad regularly? If so, is there anything else that you’d like to see Apple add in future versions of iOS? What about being able to set multiple sessions in a 24 hour period? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
